Self Host MCP Server Cost: A Build vs Buy Cost Guide
The cost to self host an MCP server is more than the server bill. It's compute, plus the hours you spend setting it up, updating it and fixing it when it breaks. For a small setup, your time usually costs more than the hardware. This guide gives you a formula, a worked example with made-up numbers, and a way to plug in your own.
Start with one concrete job
Say three analysts need to explore a PostgreSQL database and run read-only queries from their AI apps. Write down which database they can reach, how often they work, and whether their apps run on their laptops or in the cloud.
There are three ways to run it. A local server starts when the user's app starts it. A remote server you run stays up at a URL. A hosted service runs an existing server for you. For the architecture trade-offs, see hosted vs self-hosted MCP.
Before pricing anything, note the server, its tools, the transport and the network path to your data. A cheap public endpoint is useless if the database only answers inside your private network.
What's the formula?
Use one monthly view for both options, with setup spread over a period you choose:
Monthly equivalent = recurring cash cost
+ monthly operating hours × hourly cost
+ setup hours × hourly cost ÷ evaluation months
For self-hosting, recurring cash covers compute, storage, backups, monitoring and network. For a hosted service, it's the subscription. In both columns, count integration setup, permission reviews and user support.
The hourly cost is what you assign to staff time. It isn't necessarily an extra invoice. A solo developer learning something new may pick a lower number than a team pushing back product work. Keep cash and time in separate rows so the difference stays visible.
What does a six-month budget look like?
These numbers are invented for the arithmetic, not market rates. Self-hosting: $20 a month for compute, 6 setup hours, 2 operating hours a month. Hosted: 2 setup hours and half an operating hour a month. Staff time is $75 an hour. Replace every time estimate with your own.
For the hosted column we use MCPifex Team at its published $49 a month, as of September 2026. The pricing page is the source for that price.
| Cost component | Self-hosted | Hosted (Team) |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cash per month | $20 | $49 |
| Setup time, once | 6 × $75 = $450 | 2 × $75 = $150 |
| Operating time per month | 2 × $75 = $150 | 0.5 × $75 = $37.50 |
| Six-month cash | $120 | $294 |
| Six-month cash plus time | $120 + $450 + $900 = $1,470 | $294 + $150 + $225 = $669 |
| Monthly equivalent | $245 | $111.50 |
Self-hosting has the lower cash bill. Hosting has the lower total once you value time. That doesn't tell you what's right for your team. The example leaves out taxes, AI app subscriptions, model API usage, database charges, custom development and big incidents.
Which assumption could flip the result?
Once setup is done, the subscription premium is $49 − $20 = $29 a month. At $75 an hour, hosting only has to save about 23 minutes of operating time a month to cover it. The example assumes 90 minutes. If your existing platform shrinks that gap to ten minutes, the result reverses.
Run your own low and high estimates. Add an incident scenario too. A four-hour incident costs $300 at the same rate, and your team would probably still handle diagnosis and user communication either way.
What does self-hosting add to your list?
Deployment and access
Getting a process to answer one tool call is a milestone, not a finished service. A shared server needs repeatable deployment, an owner, credentials with the right permissions, and a way to test it from the real client. Cloudflare's remote MCP guide treats deployment, client testing and authentication as separate steps. Budget them separately too.
A connection that works from an engineer's terminal doesn't prove a cloud-hosted chat app can reach it. Each client has its own config format and auth behavior, so allow time for each one.
Updates, checks and recovery
Someone has to review package updates, watch for failures, and confirm a restored server still reaches its data. Keep a small acceptance test: list the tools, make one harmless read, and check that a disabled tool is refused.
The official MCP security best practices cover problems like token misuse and local server compromise. Self-hosting gives you control over these choices and the job of checking them. Put real review tasks in the budget, not a vague "security" percentage.
What does MCPifex cover, and what do you still own?
MCPifex runs the server for you. You create an instance of a catalog server, save its configuration, choose the enabled tools, test the connection and generate an API key. The portal shows call logs and daily usage counts for each instance. The instances and tools guide covers the details.
As of September 2026, Free includes 3 personal instances. Pro is $19 a month for 10. Team is $49 a month for 30, with up to five members. Instances are the only limit, and tool calls are unlimited. Annual prices are $190 for Pro and $490 for Team.
Check that the server you need is in the marketplace before you count on it. A custom internal API won't be there. You still own the source system, its permissions and the decision to enable write tools. For PostgreSQL, pair tool selection with a restricted database account, as the PostgreSQL server page explains.
How do you decide?
Self-host when you need custom server code, private network access or full infrastructure ownership that a hosted option can't give you. It's also reasonable when you already have a platform and an operator, so the extra work really is small.
Use hosting when the server you need is available and you'd rather not run packages yourself. Run a short pilot with real clients, record setup and support time, then redo the math with your own numbers. You can start on the free plan with no card.
Key takeaways
- Compare the same workload, users and security needs before comparing prices.
- Show cash and staff time separately. A free server package still costs time to run.
- The worked budget uses invented numbers. Swap in your own estimates.
- Confirm the server you need is actually available before choosing hosting.
